Increased industrialisation has greatly increased the amount of greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere. Concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere are at levels far higher then any historical level able to be measured. Still, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is being increased by more than three million tonnes per year.
Australia has the highest per capita rate of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. The warmest twelve years recorded in Australia have all occurred since 1990, a trend found in many countries.
The massive legacy load of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will cause climatic problems for generations to come even if we ceased any emissions tomorrow. For this reason, enhancing natural processes that remove CO2 from the atmosphere is both essential and the most cost effective method of reducing CO2.
